This spring is one big Peeps show.
The iconic marshmallow Easter candy shaped like chicks is making seasonal appearances atop special-edition doughnuts as well as the scent behind a limited-time candle from America’s top waxsmith.
The edible offering from Dunkin’ Donuts consists of classic glazed treats — with either a green frosting with a pink drizzle, or a strawberry frosting with a green strip — topped with a mini Peep in the center.
They’ll be baked from March 31 through the Easter season. If you miss them, chirp easy: In May, the chain will start selling bite-sized Peeps Minis in three flavors: Strawberry Crème, Chocolate Crème and Sour Watermelon. Two dozen Minis cost $3.99.
Given the importance of this seasonal news, the Daily News brought a dozen Peeps doughnuts into the Taste Kitchen, where a pack of hungry journalists rendered a simple verdict: If you like Peeps, you’ll love the doughnut version.
“Spring has sprung in my mouth,” said one tester. “The soft marshmallow peep juxtaposed with the crunchy doughnut texture is nice.”
Others were disappointed.
“It is just a doughnut with a Peep on it,” said another grizzled Taste Kitchen veteran. “It thought maybe it’d be filled with Peep or marshmallow.”
A few were even alarmed.
“Are you going to eat that thing?” asked one Newser as another was about to bite into the neon green doughnut. “It will change your chromosomes!”
Meanwhile, the Yankee Candle company is celebrating the Peep by infusing a white candle with its sweet marshmallow scent.
The Yankee Peeps candle ($27.99) is on sale through April.
